# Negative Space
**Domain:** Art / Design / Perception
**Doc Type:** Concept Node
**Maturity:** Developed
## Definition
**Negative space** is the unoccupied or comparatively quiet field surrounding and separating visible forms. It is not leftover space; it actively shapes figure-ground relations, rhythm, balance, legibility, and attention.
The concept extends beyond visual design. Pauses in music, omissions in writing, silence in conversation, and unmeasured regions in a model can function as structural absences that make the present material intelligible.
## Corpus Context
[[journal/2010-11-07 - Silence and Non-Observation|Silence and Non-Observation]] uses negative space to show how absence can carry organization without becoming a conventional signal.
