# Network Epidemiology
**Entity class:** Scientific method and field
**Domain:** Epidemiology / networks / mathematical modeling
**Doc Type:** Canonical Method Node
**Maturity:** Developed
## Definition
**Network epidemiology** studies how transmissible conditions move through structured relationships rather than assuming that every member of a population mixes equally with every other member. Nodes can represent people, households, institutions, locations, or populations; edges represent biologically relevant opportunities for transmission.
## Why Structure Matters
Degree, clustering, bridges, repeated contact, temporal order, mobility, and heterogeneity can determine whether a condition dies out, persists, or reaches new communities. Contact tracing reconstructs local portions of the network. Surveillance and statistical models estimate hidden or incomplete portions. Intervention can then focus on cases, contacts, settings, routes, or behaviors that disproportionately affect onward transmission.
These mathematical tools transfer to other network problems because graphs, temporal sequences, missing observations, and intervention optimization recur across domains. ## Austin Research Context
The live Austin corpus identifies [[wiki/Lauren Ancel Meyers|Lauren Ancel Meyers]] and related modeling work as a concrete institutional bridge among outbreak detection, forecasting, control, biosurveillance, and national-security sponsors. That evidence supports methodological continuity while preserving the difference between public health, biothreat detection, and counterterrorism investigation.
