## Definition
**Neurodata Without Borders (NWB)** is a self-describing standard and schema for packaging neurophysiology data and metadata in machine- and human-readable form. Its ecosystem supports validation, conversion, analysis, visualization, extensions, and archival sharing.
## Architectural role
NWB is oriented toward neurophysiology sessions and hierarchical scientific data, while BIDS organizes whole studies through files, directories, and naming conventions. They are complementary and can be used together in compatible layouts.
