# Non-Observation **Domain:** Epistemology / Ethics / Systems **Doc Type:** Concept Node **Maturity:** Developed ## Definition **Non-observation** is the condition in which something remains unwatched, unmeasured, unrecorded, or outside an observer's selected frame. It can arise through ignorance, neglect, technical limitation, refusal, ethical restraint, or deliberate preservation of privacy. Non-observation is not automatically virtuous. A missing observation can conceal harm or prevent accountability. Yet continuous measurement can also alter behavior, narrow possibility, and convert a person into the categories a system is equipped to recognize. ## Corpus Context In Silence and Non-Observation, the concept names the remainder that prevents an instrument or model from being mistaken for the world itself. ## See Also Observation · Silence · Mental Privacy · Counterfactual Opportunity ## Relationships - **Counterpart:** Observation. - **Paired absence:** Silence. - **Field:** Semiotics · Epistemic Humility. - **Journal source:** Silence and Non-Observation. ## Simple Reminders, Quotations, and Thoughts > “Absence is also a sign. A silence, a missing word, or an unspoken topic can carry as much meaning as anything said aloud, and every act of observation selects what counts by drawing a boundary around it. Attending to what goes unsaid and unobserved completes the picture.” > **— Bryant McGill**, *Reclaiming Selfishness, Balance, and the Whole Self, Part 1 - Livestream (Jun 2016)* Absence Is Also a Sign by Bryant McGill
