# Normality **Domain:** Statistics / Psychology / Social behavior **Doc Type:** Canonical concept node **Maturity:** Developed ## Definition Normality may describe a statistical concentration, a familiar social pattern, an expected function, or an evaluative standard. These meanings must be kept distinct. ## Mechanism and Significance In a distribution, “normal” often names the crowded region near the center. Social systems can transform that descriptive frequency into pressure by treating what is common as what is proper. ## Evidence Boundary Frequency does not establish health, virtue, truth, or desirability. Statistical rarity likewise does not establish originality or merit by itself. ## Relationships Originality · Social Control · Identity ## Simple Reminders, Quotations, and Thoughts > “Normal is a statistical idea. Behaviors spread across a bell curve, and "normal" simply describes the crowded middle. Being a little outside that middle can be a sign of originality.” > **— Bryant McGill**, *Why Real Love Gives Freedom and Lets Go of Control - Livestream (Dec 2015)* Being Outside the Crowded Middle Can Signal Originality by Bryant McGill
