## Definition
**OME-Zarr** is the Open Microscopy Environment's Next-Generation File Format for multidimensional bioimaging data stored with Zarr. It standardizes metadata for axes, multiscale resolution levels, physical coordinates, transformations, labels, and related image structures.
## Architectural role
OME-Zarr permits large volumetric datasets to be traversed at several resolutions and accessed in chunks. This is crucial for microscopy and connectomics, where a complete image volume may be too large to move or render as one object.
