# Open Rack V3 **Domain:** Data Center Standards / Rack Infrastructure **Doc Type:** Technical Standard Node **Maturity:** Developed ## Definition **Open Rack V3** is an Open Compute Project rack architecture that standardizes facility-facing mechanical, power and cooling interfaces for scalable computing equipment. ## Governing Boundary The standard governs where the building meets information technology: rack geometry, equipment support, shared power architecture, management and liquid-cooling readiness. This turns the rack from generic furniture into a coordinated infrastructure domain. ## Higher-Order Capability Compatible equipment can share a predictable physical and service environment while remaining heterogeneous at the compute level. Common rack infrastructure supports modular deployment, front service and component lifecycles that need not match the lifetime of the whole rack. ## Relation to Governance [[wiki/Standards as Governance|Standards as Governance]] becomes material here. A dimensional or connector choice shapes which equipment can enter the rack, how it receives power and cooling and which suppliers can participate without bespoke facility changes. ## Failure Modes Nominal conformance may not guarantee operational interchangeability.
