# Open Rack Wide **Domain:** Data Center Standards / Rack Infrastructure **Doc Type:** Technical Standard Node **Maturity:** Emerging ## Definition **Open Rack Wide** is an Open Compute Project rack architecture that extends the open-rack approach for wider, high-density systems and the mechanical, electrical, thermal and service interfaces they require. ## Governing Boundary The standard addresses a systems problem created by accelerator scale: dense trays, scale-up interconnect, power conversion and cooling compete for rack volume and service access. A wider common envelope changes which system arrangements can be built without each operator inventing a proprietary enclosure. ## Higher-Order Capability Standardizing the rack-level boundary permits multiple suppliers to design equipment and facility interfaces around the same spatial assumptions. It allows innovation inside the compute domain while making deployment and service more composable at the installation boundary. ## Relation to Governance Open Rack Wide demonstrates that interoperability sometimes requires changing the container rather than forcing new systems into a legacy geometry. The authority to revise that container is a form of architectural revision authority. ## Failure Modes The ecosystem is newer than the underlying Open Rack lineage.
