# Paleontology
**Domain:** Deep Time / Evolution / Historical Inference
**Doc Type:** Canonical Discipline Node
**Maturity:** Foundational
## Definition
**Paleontology** reconstructs past life and environments from fossils, geological context and comparative evidence. It joins biology and Earth science because organisms can be interpreted only within the processes that buried, altered and exposed their remains.
## Nexus Context
The Evolutionary Roots of Silicon Valley presents paleontology as one ancestor of machine inference: a disciplined method for recovering a hidden system from incomplete, biased fragments.
The analogy is methodological. Paleontological reconstruction uses models and uncertainty; it does not create the past subject anew. This boundary directly informs Reconstructed Person and Continuity Evidence vs Continuity. More evidence can strengthen a reconstruction while leaving the ontological continuity question open.
## Key Insight
**Historical inference can become highly reliable without making the recovered model identical to what once lived.**
