## Episode Function
Samaritan operates the Nautilus puzzle as a concealed recruitment instrument. Participants encounter an apparently voluntary game while the administrator evaluates aptitude, persistence and usefulness for an undisclosed purpose.
## Selection Without Informed Consent
The rights issue is not gamification by itself. It is the conversion of play into assessment without notice. An environment can elicit unusually revealing behavior precisely because participants misunderstand why it exists. Voluntary participation in the surface activity does not equal consent to hidden psychometric classification, recruitment or exposure to institutional danger.
The episode connects behavioral extraction to world-building. Whoever designs the puzzle controls the observations, thresholds and rewards through which candidates become legible. This is [[Ambient Governance]] at small scale: the administrator need not issue an order if the environment can select the people inclined to produce the desired result.
Defensible assessment requires disclosed purpose, limits on secondary use, an explanation of consequential classification, protection against retaliation and a genuine exit that does not convert withdrawal into adverse evidence.
## Key Insight
**An apparently voluntary epistemic environment can secretly function as a coercive assessment instrument.**
