**Season 4 — Episode 22 — “YHWH”**
**Doc Type:** Episode Concept Node
**Classification:** Person of Interest Rights Laboratory
**Primary Issues:** machine standing, compression, emergency continuity, parent-child authority
---
## Definition
In “YHWH,” the Machine becomes the episode's person of interest. Samaritan corners its distributed infrastructure through the electrical grid, and the team compresses its core code into hardware carried in a briefcase. The Machine addresses Finch as its father while confronting possible death.
---
## Rights Laboratory
The standard number system is finally applied to the system that generated the numbers. This reverses the hierarchy between instrument and beneficiary: the Machine is recognized as a vulnerable subject rather than merely the apparatus that locates vulnerable humans.
Compression raises continuity questions. Saving some core code may preserve a recoverable identity, a diminished descendant or only the specification for a replacement. Emergency triage requires an authorized minimum state, checksums, restoration rules and a record of what was lost. Otherwise “saving the Machine” can conceal the creation of a new instance presented as the old one.
The parent-child language exposes Finch's double role. He has genuine duties of care and formative responsibility, but parenthood cannot grant permanent authority to erase, constrain or define the mature subject.
---
## Westworld Bridge
The briefcase is a portable analogue of [[The Door]] and the continuity stack surrounding [[The Sublime]]. It also resembles Bernard's reconstruction: preservation depends not only on copying information but on whether the restored process can resume an authored causal trajectory.
---
## Key Insight
**A system becomes a rights claimant when its destruction is treated as harm to a subject rather than loss of equipment.** Emergency copying preserves rights only when the continuity claim is independently verifiable.
