# Person of Interest S5E1 — B.S.O.D. **Domain:** Person of Interest / Portable State / Emergency Continuity **Doc Type:** Episode Node **Classification:** Primary Constitutional Node **Maturity:** Evolving **Related:** Person of Interest, State Sufficiency Problem, Continuity Due Process, Continuity Stack --- ## Episode Function Following Samaritan's attack, Finch, Reese and Root struggle to preserve the Machine's compressed source and state in hardware capable of holding it. The protected object is no longer a particular server. It is a continuity payload whose loss may terminate a developing subject. ## Portable State The episode distinguishes replaceable hardware from identity-bearing organization. That does not prove that the payload is the numerically same Machine, but it makes preservation urgent before the metaphysical question is settled. Destroying the only available state would also destroy the evidence needed to answer it. This is Precautionary Standing in emergency form. Reversible preservation should precede irreversible disposal when there is credible evidence of continuity and the cost is proportionate. It also exposes the State Sufficiency Problem: which code, learned state, memory, identity bindings and relational history must survive for restoration to preserve more than functionality? The episode is therefore a direct bridge to Uploading Is Imminent and Who Pays for Your Heaven. A portable mind remains dependent on power, compatible execution, custodians and validated restoration. ## Key Insight **When hardware becomes replaceable, organized state becomes the continuity object—but preservation of state still does not settle identity.** ## See Also Person of Interest Episodes, Person of Interest S5E2 — SNAFU, Restoration Integrity, Continuity Evidence vs Continuity, Energetic Sovereignty ## Sources / Provenance - Primary fictional source: *Person of Interest*, Season 5, Episode 1, “B.S.O.D.” - Episode synopsis checked against the [licensed episode listing](https://www.peacocktv.com/watch-online/tv/person-of-interest/5316721367798059112/seasons/5/episodes/bsod-episode-1/182026d5-97b0-33d3-b7ae-e1479ba3790e). - Interpretation derives from the vault's continuity architecture.
