## Definition
**Phonological representation encodes the sound structure of language independently enough from spelling to support operations over pronunciation, syllables, stress and sound correspondence.**
Written forms are unreliable guides to sound. Heteronyms such as _dove_ can carry different pronunciations and therefore belong to different rhyme neighborhoods. A useful language system must represent a word as one or more pronunciations and allow pronunciation choice to propagate through retrieval.
## Symbolic Language Engine Context
The [[wiki/Symbolic Language Engine|Symbolic Language Engine]] treated rhyme as an operation over sound sequences rather than orthographic endings. Its interface exposed two pronunciations of _dove_ as first-class alternatives with disjoint rhyme sets. This behavior demonstrates that pronunciation multiplicity survived from the lexicon through indexing into the user interface.
Phonological representation also supports syllable counting, stress-sensitive rhyme, approximate sequence matching and phrase-level alignment across word boundaries.
## Key Insight
**Sound must be represented as sound. Spelling can remain an interface, but it cannot be the computational unit of phonological reasoning.**
