# Pipefitting and Mechanical Trades
Liquid cooling made computing a plumbing problem, and plumbing at this scale is a licensed craft. Pipefitters, welders, sheet metal workers, millwrights, and controls technicians install and maintain the chain that carries heat out of the building. As accelerator racks moved to liquid, these trades moved from the periphery of a data center project to its center.
> [!note] The one-sentence version
> Somebody has to weld the pipe that keeps the accelerators alive, and the quality of that weld is now a computing concern.
## What the work is
Pipefitters lay out, fabricate, and install the piping systems: chilled water mains, condenser water, the technology loops serving coolant distribution units, manifolds down the rack rows, and the thousands of branch connections and valves that make a loop maintainable. Welders join the pipe, and in systems where cleanliness governs reliability the weld quality is tested rather than assumed, by radiography or other non-destructive examination. Sheet metal workers build the ductwork for the air systems that handle the residue. Millwrights set and align the rotating equipment, chillers, pumps, and towers, to tolerances that determine bearing life. Controls technicians install and calibrate the instrumentation and program the sequences that run the plant, which is increasingly the most technically demanding role on the mechanical side.
## Why cleanliness became the governing discipline
A chilled water loop tolerates a good deal. A loop feeding microchannel cold plates does not. Channels fractions of a millimeter across block, and particulate, weld slag, flux residue, pipe scale, and biological growth will find them. The trade's response is a cleanliness regime borrowed from pharmaceutical and semiconductor piping: controlled fabrication, capped pipe ends, purge during welding, flushing and chemical cleaning to a specified particle count before any cold plate sees flow, filtration maintained in service, and water chemistry monitored and dosed. Pressure testing and leak detection are routine; the difference now is that a loop must be proven clean as well as tight.
That standard is the practical bridge between trade craft and silicon performance. A weld with slag inside it, left in a line serving a rack of accelerators, will eventually throttle a million dollars of hardware, and nobody will know why for a week.
## How a pipefitter is made
The pathway mirrors the electrical trades: a four-to-five-year apprenticeship combining paid work under a journeyman with classroom instruction, leading to journeyman status, with welding certifications earned and maintained by test for each process and position. Specializations in orbital welding, high-purity systems, and controls carry additional qualification. The same arithmetic applies: the journeymen available at the end of the decade are the apprentices admitted now. See Apprenticeship.

## Evidence posture
- **Established:** the scope of pipefitting, welding, sheet metal, millwright, and controls work in data center mechanical systems; non-destructive examination of welds in cleanliness-critical systems; flushing and chemical cleaning to specified particle counts before cold plates are placed in service; filtration and water chemistry maintenance against corrosion, particulate, and biological growth; apprenticeship of four to five years with welding certification by test and position.
- **Strongly indicated:** particulate and weld residue as a leading cause of cold-plate flow degradation; the engineering reasoning is established and operator incident data is not centrally published.
