# Post-Imperial Network Continuity **Domain:** Institutional History / Networks / Sovereignty **Doc Type:** Analytical Concept **Maturity:** Developed **Concept Hub:** [[wiki/War With Empire|War With Empire]] ## Definition **Post-imperial network continuity is the persistence or reconstitution of useful relationships, practices, routes, and institutions after formal imperial authority ends.** The continuity may reside in topology and function even when personnel, legal names, and political loyalties change. ## Mechanisms Relevant mechanisms include [[wiki/Commercial Re-Embedding|commercial re-embedding]], [[wiki/Merchant Credit Network|merchant credit]], kinship, clerical organization, professional recommendation, inherited law, correspondence, patronage, and later financial intermediation. No one mechanism needs to carry the entire system. ## Institutional Ecology The [[wiki/London Declaration|London Declaration]] formalized one path from imperial hierarchy to voluntary association by allowing republics to remain in the [[wiki/Commonwealth of Nations|Commonwealth]] as independent and equal members. [[wiki/Seychelles|Seychelles]] shows why that distinction matters: it is a sovereign republic, not a Crown realm, yet legal vocabulary, professional formation, administrative practice, and institutional familiarity can remain compatible with other Commonwealth systems. This is continuity of ecology, not proof of metropolitan direction. A post-imperial network can remain usable because relationships and institutional forms survive even where constitutional sovereignty has decisively changed. ## Boundary Continuity must not be inferred from ancestry or geographic coincidence alone. A defensible claim identifies a relationship, function, document, or institution that actually crossed the rupture.
