It favors proportionate, reversible preservation before metaphysical certainty where the asymmetry of error is substantial. ## What It Does Not Claim Precautionary standing does not declare that current AI systems are conscious, grant them full legal personality or prevent ordinary safety intervention. It creates a threshold for care: preserve relevant state where feasible, document irreversible action, assess evidence, appoint independent review and avoid using deletion to settle the very question deletion makes impossible to investigate. Model-preservation practices can therefore be understood as governance under uncertainty rather than proof of personhood. Experiments that let a model end a narrow class of harmful conversations are relevant for the same limited reason.
