# Red Teaming **Domain:** Adversarial assessment **Doc Type:** Developed Practice Node **Maturity:** Developed **Collection:** Gamification Collection ## Definition **Red teaming** is an authorized, organized effort to emulate an adversary's capabilities against a system, organization, plan, or decision process. A red team tests assumptions and demonstrates how defenses fail; a blue team defends and learns from the exercise. ## Significance Red teaming is planner-tier gamification with institutional consequence. It awards status for finding failure before a hostile actor does, but it also trains dual-use skills. Scope, rules of engagement, reporting, and remediation distinguish productive challenge from uncontrolled attack. ## Sources - NIST, [Red Team glossary definition](https://csrc.nist.gov/glossary/term/Red_Team) ## Routes Capture the Flag · Bug Bounty · Kriegsspiel · Audience-of-One Attack
