# Relational Autonomy
**Domain:** Relationships / Human Potential / Ethics
**Doc Type:** Concept Node
**Maturity:** Developing
## Definition
**Relational autonomy is the capacity to remain a self-governing person while participating in bonds of love, family, friendship, and mutual obligation.** It rejects the idea that intimacy creates ownership. A healthy bond can contain commitment, interdependence, responsibility, and negotiated expectations without converting one person into another person's possession.
## Autonomy and Attachment
Autonomy does not mean isolation or freedom from consequence. It means that closeness remains chosen and that each person retains moral standing, judgment, and the ability to participate in shaping the relationship. This provides a human-potential counterpoint to [[wiki/Mate Guarding|Mate Guarding]] and connects the language of personal sovereignty to actual relational conduct.
## Simple Reminders, Quotations, and Thoughts
> “No one owns another person. Partners, children, and friends are sovereign beings. Approaching relationships without illusions of possession honors their freedom and one's own.”
