Perception, emotion, selfhood, and agency can function as compact interfaces: they present action-ready wholes while compressing the distributed computations, bodily regulation, history, and uncertainty that produced them. “Rendered” identifies mediation rather than falsity. A pain, feeling, percept, or sense of authorship can be real in consequence and first-person force while remaining a constructed presentation of deeper processes. ## Four surfaces - **Perceptual surface:** a stable world appears from inference constrained by incoming signals. - **Affective surface:** interoception, allostasis, prior experience, and categorization become felt valence and arousal. - **Self surface:** a Recursive Self-Model appears as immediate identity through phenomenal transparency. - **Agency surface:** distributed activation is presented as an owned intention and narrated reason. ## Evidence boundary Scientific findings establish model-mediated perception, body-state regulation, plastic body ownership, and limits on introspective access. The broader claim that all human meaning is interface is the article's philosophical synthesis. The presence of an interface state supplies evidence about organization and reportability; consciousness and moral standing remain independently assessed. ## Relationships - **Master thesis:** Inference Machine Inversion. - **Underlying problem:** Recursive Binding Problem. - **Perception:** Predictive Processing. - **Feeling:** Embodied Cognition. - **Self:** Continuity Fiction and Recursive Self-Model. - **Agency:** Narrative Ownership After Activation. - **Comparison rule:** Substrate Honesty. ## Sources / Provenance - The Inversion: We Were the Inference Machines First — primary source for the rendered-interface formulation. - [Barrett, “The Theory of Constructed Emotion” (2017)](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27798257/) — construction of emotion from prediction, interoception, and categorization. - [Seth and Friston, “Active Interoceptive Inference and the Emotional Brain” (2016)](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28080966/) — interoceptive inference, feelings, and embodied selfhood. - [Botvinick and Cohen, “Rubber Hands ‘Feel’ Touch That Eyes See” (1998)](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9486643/) — experimentally induced body-ownership illusion.
