# Representational Due Process
**Domain:** Digital Rights / Administrative Governance
**Doc Type:** Canonical Rights Concept
**Maturity:** Developed
**Concept Status:** Interpretive synthesis developed in this corpus
## Definition
**Representational due process** is the set of procedural protections required when a machine-readable representation materially governs access to work, mobility, finance, health, identity, service or institutional standing.
The term extends established due-process concerns into operational model space. It is a corpus synthesis, not a claim that one legal doctrine already supplies an identical remedy in every jurisdiction.
## Required Protections
- notice that a consequential representation is being used;
- provenance for important facts, inferences and updates;
- inspectability proportionate to consequence;
- disclosure of uncertainty and model purpose;
- correction that reaches downstream consumers;
- meaningful appeal to an authority able to change the outcome;
- separation between identity and the authority attached to it;
- preservation of contradictory evidence and alternative representations.
## Governing Variable
Representational due process governs contestability before a model's output becomes self-confirming institutional reality.
## Material and Computational Manifestation
Credit, eligibility, risk, access-control and identity systems become candidates when their state propagates into real constraints. A correction limited to one database is ineffective if other systems continue consuming the old representation.
## Relation to Governance
Appeals Mechanisms provide procedural routes. Evidence Boundary limits what may support a determination. Model-Subject Boundary preserves the difference between a person and the model used to act upon that person.
## Failure Modes
Explanation without remedy, appeal without suspensive effect, opaque provenance, inaccessible technical language and endless re-ingestion of corrected error turn procedure into theater.
