# Riccardo Mottola **Domain:** GNUstep / OpenStep / Objective-C / Cross-Platform Software / Technical History **Public name:** Riccardo; “grey gandalf” **Primary archive:** [_The Art is Long_](https://multixden.blogspot.com/) **Public profile:** [Blogger profile](https://www.blogger.com/profile/03313094807656717004) **Related:** [[wiki/GNUstep|GNUstep]], [[wiki/NeXT|NeXT]], [[wiki/NEXTSTEP|NEXTSTEP]], [[wiki/World Wide Web|World Wide Web]], [[wiki/CERN|CERN]], [[wiki/ETH Zurich|ETH Zürich]], [[articles/The Art is Long|The Art is Long: Vespucci of Immortality]], [[journal/2025-08-15 Navigating Uncharted Territory|Navigating Uncharted Territory]] --- ## The Screenshot That Opens the Map [“Browser and WebKit progress” — January 7, 2008](https://multixden.blogspot.com/2008/01/browser-and-webkit-progress.html) ![[resources/images/the-art-is-long-01-vespucci-gutenberg-constitution.jpg]] This is the image Bryant McGill keeps returning to: **Vespucci**, **SimpleWebKit** and [[wiki/GNUstep|GNUstep]] learning to render the Web while the browser windows hold Project Gutenberg and the Constitution of the United States. Explorer, printing, constitutional text, browser, free software and a NeXT-derived interface lineage occupy one screen. It is ordinary development evidence and, at the same time, an unusually dense picture of how technical history survives by being made executable again. Riccardo Mottola is a long-running GNUstep developer and maintainer whose public work crosses application frameworks, desktop software, browsers, email, graphics, scientific plotting, portability and the preservation of OpenStep-style application architecture. GNUstep’s own developer directory identifies him as the current maintainer of **GWorkspace**, a maintainer and developer across GNUstep libraries and applications, the principal developer of the GNUstep Application Project, the developer and maintainer of **PRICE**, and a tester of unusual or “exotic” platforms. The official GWorkspace page likewise names him as its current maintainer. His Blogger profile calls the site “The Den of Multix (aka grey gandalf),” places him in Bergamo, Italy, and lists art, photography, classical music, computers—“GNUstep mainly”—and motorbikes among his interests. The archive below remains the most revealing public record because it shows the work longitudinally: releases beside experiments, portability beside aesthetics, source maintenance beside machines that the commercial computing story forgot. ## A Rosetta Stone—With a Necessary Retraction Bryant describes using Riccardo’s blog as a **Rosetta Stone for understanding life**. All right. That sounds insane. A Rosetta Stone for understanding a very specific part of **technical life**. There. Much better. The joke backs away from the cosmic claim without surrendering the real one. A long development archive contains information that its individual posts never had to state directly. Priorities appear in compatibility choices. Temperament appears in bug reports. Historical pressure appears in dependencies. Aesthetic judgment appears in icons and window furniture. Community appears in acknowledgements, meetings and comments. Read across eighteen years, the posts become strata: a surviving record of which abstractions remained portable, which platforms resisted them, which programs were revived and which relationships had to be reconstructed before old software could live again. Bryant develops that reading in [[journal/2025-08-15 Navigating Uncharted Territory|The Art Is Long: Navigating Uncharted Territory]], his first-person journal account of reading the archive and building GNUstep locally. ## Bookmarks, Drawing Pencils and Externalized Memory [“Bookmarks... and drawing pencils” — February 2, 2009](https://multixden.blogspot.com/2009/02/bookmarks-and-drawing-pencils.html) ![[resources/images/the-art-is-long-02-bookmarks-and-drawing-pencils.jpg]] Riccardo treated bookmarks as personal information worth preserving across Vespucci, Safari, GNUstep workstations, mobile systems, Macs and netbooks. The post then turns from portable data models to newly drawn application icons. That conjunction—**memory and drawing pencils, interchange and personality**—is central to Bryant’s reading of the archive. A browser does not merely retrieve the world; over time its bookmarks become a map of the particular world one person repeatedly chose to visit. ## Rebuilding GWorkspace Instead of Merely Remembering It [“GWorkspace dock” — February 16, 2012](https://multixden.blogspot.com/2012/02/gworkspace-dock.html) ![[resources/images/the-art-is-long-03-gworkspace-dock.jpg]] Bryant completed the excruciating build process required to run **GWorkspace** inside his own locally compiled GNUstep environment. That experience turned software history into experimental archaeology. A source tree stopped being a textual artifact and became an executable relationship among compilers, frameworks, backends, Objective-C semantics and desktop behavior. Riccardo’s understated note that the Dock was now “really transparent”—provided the backend supports it—lands differently after one has personally discovered how many layers must agree before a translucent rectangle consents to appear. The official GNUstep project describes GWorkspace as a reimplementation of the NeXT workspace manager that also incorporates spatial browsing, database-backed search, live folders, a multipurpose shelf and a Dock. Riccardo’s stewardship therefore belongs to more than interface nostalgia: it keeps a distinct model of the desktop inspectable, buildable and usable. ## The Apple, NeXT, CERN and ETH Zürich Intersection The relationship here is **architectural, not biographical**. This page does not claim that Riccardo worked at [[wiki/CERN|CERN]] or [[wiki/ETH Zurich|ETH Zürich]]. It traces separate technical lineages that meet in Bryant’s larger history of scientific software. - GNUstep preserves and extends the OpenStep programming model descended from [[wiki/NeXT|NeXT]] and [[wiki/NEXTSTEP|NEXTSTEP]], the lineage that later flowed into Apple’s Cocoa environments. - [[wiki/Tim Berners-Lee|Tim Berners-Lee]] built the first Web browser-editor and server on a NeXT computer at CERN because its development environment made an urgent scientific information-sharing system practical. - At ETH Zürich, the separate [[wiki/Darwin Bioinformatics Environment|Darwin bioinformatics environment]] made sequence retrieval, phylogenetics and molecular-evolution work programmable. - Riccardo’s Vespucci, GWorkspace, Graphos, GNUMail and other projects demonstrate another aspect of scientific and technical continuity: an architecture survives when people repeatedly port it, repair it, document it and make it run on hardware its original designers never planned to support. These routes meet in [[articles/The Art is Long|The Art is Long: Vespucci of Immortality]], but their institutional histories remain distinct. The connection is the long survival of useful computational forms—not a claim of hidden coordination. The surrounding software archaeology is unusually well preserved. The live [NiCE NeXTSTEP/OpenStep software archive](https://ftp.nice.ch/pub/next/) retains downloadable packages, while [CERN's November 1992 WorldWideWeb record](https://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/News/9211.html) records the original NeXT browser-editor binary and source-tree locations. Bryant documents the complete four-route map in [[journal/2025-08-15 Navigating Uncharted Territory#For Whoever Is Interested: The Archive Trail|the journal archive trail]]. These sources establish the environment around the lineage; they do not establish a Riccardo–CERN or Riccardo–ETH affiliation. ## A Visual Development Record ### GShisen on Macintosh [“GShisen on the Macintosh” — June 11, 2009](https://multixden.blogspot.com/2009/06/gshisen-on-macintosh.html) ![[resources/images/the-art-is-long-04-gshisen-mac.jpg]] A GNUstep game inhabits a Macintosh desktop through a native Cocoa port. The screenshot captures the archive’s recurring proposition: source and interface ideas can cross environments without becoming identical to any one of them. ### GNUstep Application Badges [“GNUstep now has badges” — August 3, 2023](https://multixden.blogspot.com/2023/08/gnustep-now-has-badges.html) ![[resources/images/the-art-is-long-05-gnustep-application-badges.png]] Application-icon badges arrive in GNUstep with themeable colors, allowing GNUMail and other applications to replace divergent compatibility paths with shared framework behavior. ### ArcticFox and the Long Life of Machines [“ArcticFox 42.1 released” — July 20, 2023](https://multixden.blogspot.com/2023/07/arcitcfox-421-released.html) ![[resources/images/the-art-is-long-06-arcticfox-webgl-macos-10-6.png]] ArcticFox running WebGL content on Mac OS X 10.6 embodies the same preservation ethic at the browser layer: old machines remain participants in the Web only when someone continues carrying security, rendering and platform work backward. ### Graphos and Editable Form [“Graphos supports Cusps!” — November 24, 2013](https://multixden.blogspot.com/2013/11/graphos-supports-cusps.html) ![[resources/images/the-art-is-long-07-graphos-cusp-spline.png]] The small spline image records a large conceptual distinction in vector drawing: whether a node’s handles remain smooth or may break into a cusp. It is exactly the kind of apparently minor capability from which usable creative software is built. ### DataBasin as Objective-C Application History [“DataBasin gets Update and a new inspector” — March 25, 2010](https://multixden.blogspot.com/2010/03/databasin-gets-update-and-new-inspector.html) ![[resources/images/the-art-is-long-08-databasin-update-inspector.png]] [“DataBasin: object inspection” — March 10, 2011](https://multixden.blogspot.com/2011/03/databasin-object-inspection.html) ![[resources/images/the-art-is-long-09-databasin-object-inspector.png]] [“DataBasin and deletion of Salesforce records” — October 20, 2009](https://multixden.blogspot.com/2009/10/databasin-and-deletion-of-salesforce.html) ![[resources/images/the-art-is-long-11-databasin-quick-delete.png]] These screenshots document ordinary but substantial application engineering: authentication, object discovery, metadata inspection, record updates and deletion exposed through an Objective-C desktop interface. They belong here as evidence of Riccardo’s range and of GNUstep’s capacity to host practical networked tools. ### Vespucci Identifies Itself [“Browser and WebKit progress” — January 7, 2008](https://multixden.blogspot.com/2008/01/browser-and-webkit-progress.html) ![[resources/images/the-art-is-long-10-vespucci-about-panel.png]] The Vespucci information panel makes the lineage beautifully explicit: a WorldWideWeb browser by Riccardo Mottola, released under GPL v2, running in a GNUstep visual language. Its name joins navigation to browsing; its continued visibility joins free software to technical memory. ## Why This Archive Matters The archive is not a victory lap written after the winners were known. It preserves history before history became tidy: Hurd, Darwin, Solaris/SPARC, MIPS, PowerPC, BSD systems, Linux distributions, Windows, old Macs and Raspberry Pi appear beside Vespucci, GWorkspace, GNUMail, Pantomime, Graphos, OresmeKit, PRICE, DataBasin, ArcticFox and small applications rescued from abandonment. The result is a record of **deep use of existing technology**—maximum practical life extracted through maintenance, portability, low dependency and architectural understanding. Bryant would like to buy Riccardo—grey gandalf—a beer in Bergamo someday. The first beer would probably be thanks. After that would come questions about Vespucci. By the second, God help him, Gutenberg and the Constitution would be back on the table. ## Sources and Evidence Boundary - [_The Art is Long_](https://multixden.blogspot.com/) — Riccardo's primary public development archive. - [Canonical Blogger posts feed](https://multixden.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default) — source of the exhaustive 171-post enumeration below; catalog checked August 18, 2026. - [Riccardo's Blogger profile](https://www.blogger.com/profile/03313094807656717004) — public location, interests and “grey gandalf” context. - [GNUstep developer directory](https://www.gnustep.org/developers/whoiswho.html) — project-maintainer and contributor roles. - [GNUstep's GWorkspace page](https://www.gnustep.org/experience/GWorkspace.html) — application history, capabilities and current maintainer. - [NiCE NeXTSTEP/OpenStep software archive](https://ftp.nice.ch/pub/next/) — surviving software, developer, driver, source and utility tree. - [CERN's November 1992 WorldWideWeb record](https://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/News/9211.html) — surviving record of the NeXT binary and source distribution paths. - [[journal/2025-08-15 Navigating Uncharted Territory|Navigating Uncharted Territory]] — Bryant's first-person account of reading the archive and rebuilding the environment. Descriptions here stay within documented software history. A shared operating-system lineage, similar scientific-computing problem, adjacent institutional history or appearance in the same article is not evidence of employment, collaboration or hidden coordination. ## Complete _The Art is Long_ Blog Archive The following catalog enumerates all **171 posts** exposed by the blog’s canonical Blogger feed, from August 24, 2005 through August 3, 2023.
