# Runtime Coherence **Domain:** Continuity Engineering / Cognitive Architecture / Identity **Doc Type:** Concept Node **Classification:** Continuity Architecture **Maturity:** Developed **Related:** Reconstructed Person, UI Integrity, Restoration Integrity, Fidelity–Plasticity Paradox, Westworld, Pantheon ## Definition **Runtime Coherence is the ability of a reconstructed, uploaded or restored person to remain self-consistent while executing through time.** It is not the same as resembling a source person at initialization. A continuity system may successfully recover memories, voice, mannerisms and behavioral responses and still fail once the reconstructed person must integrate new experience, revise beliefs, preserve autobiographical order and remain recognizably self-directed across repeated state changes. ## Continuity Taxonomy - **Acquisition fidelity:** how accurately source information is captured. - **Initial reconstruction fidelity:** how convincingly the person is instantiated at the start. - **Relational fidelity:** whether the reconstruction remains intelligible within the relationships that partly constituted the source person. - **Runtime coherence:** whether the running person can integrate change without collapsing into contradiction or fragmentation. - **Longitudinal continuity:** whether identity remains defensible across extended time, migration, restoration, branching and repair. These layers should not be collapsed into one score. A system can be excellent at one and fail at another. ## Pantheon and Westworld Pantheon dramatizes damaged uploads whose memory architecture cannot sustain continued operation. Westworld supplies the complementary laboratory: James Delos can be made to wake up convincingly, yet cannot remain stable, while Bernard Lowe survives because reconstruction is allowed to become a viable person rather than an exact frozen replay. The shared lesson is blunt: **They can make the dead person wake up long before they can make the dead person stay alive.** ## Key Insight Continuity is not a snapshot property. It is a sustained relation among memory, self-model, embodiment or habitat, plasticity, social recognition and the capacity to metabolize new time. ## See Also Fidelity–Plasticity Paradox, Architecture vs Accretion, Memory Integration vs Identity Erasure, State Sufficiency Problem, Consciousness Continuity
