## Definition
**SIMNET** (Simulator Networking) was a U.S. Department of Defense program begun in the 1980s to network geographically distributed vehicle simulators in a shared virtual battlefield. It demonstrated that many relatively inexpensive simulators could inhabit one persistent exercise rather than relying only on isolated, high-fidelity devices.
## Significance
[[articles/gamification/America Loves Games and the Home Court Advantage|America Loves Games and the Home Court Advantage]] places SIMNET in the longer American sequence from instrumented play to shared synthetic terrain. Its critical innovation was not visual realism alone but the construction of a [[wiki/Common Virtual Environment|common virtual environment]] in which many participants could act on compatible state.
SIMNET is a material ancestor of networked virtual worlds and distributed military training. It joins interoperability, common state, real-time adjudication, and embodied control—the technical substrate through which a simulated contest can become an institutionally consequential exercise.
