## Definition
**Satoshi Nakamoto** is the pseudonym used by the author or authors of the Bitcoin white paper and the early Bitcoin software and correspondence. The legal identity or identities behind the name remain unestablished.
## Significance
In January 2009 Satoshi discussed reward points, donation tokens, and game currency among ways an initially valueless network might acquire use. The same correspondence and blockchain chronology frame the first recognized transfer to Hal Finney, while the mapping from keys to named people remains partly off-chain.
