A security state is not identical to a [[wiki/Secret State|Secret State]]. Some security institutions and powers are publicly established and legally regulated even when particular operations remain classified. Nor is it automatically a [[wiki/Deep State|Deep State]]: the analytical question is how much autonomous continuity and agenda-setting power the security apparatus possesses beneath political turnover. ## British Context Richard J. Aldrich's chapter _The Security State_ examines the British intelligence and security services together with the Whitehall machinery linking them to the core executive.
