# Self-Reference
**Domain:** Logic / Language / Cognition / Computation
**Doc Type:** Concept Node
**Maturity:** Developed
**Related:** Recursion, Recursive Self-Model, Formal Systems, metacognition
---
## Definition
**Self-reference** occurs when a statement, representation or system refers to itself or to a structure of which it is a part. It can enable self-description and metacognition while also producing paradox, incompleteness or unstable feedback.
## Corpus Function
Self-reference links Formal Systems to Recursive Self-Model and the emerging intelligence themes in Bauhaus Architects of AI. It should not be treated as sufficient evidence of consciousness: a system may encode or manipulate a representation of itself without subjective experience.
## Key Insight
**A system’s ability to represent itself expands its operational horizon but does not settle what, if anything, it experiences.**
