# Semantic Annotation
Semantic annotation adds lightweight marks that declare the role or meaning of content rather than merely its visual appearance.
In Bryant's writer markup, braces identify a sentence as a quote and a leading plus identifies a passage. The marks preserve normal writing flow while giving software enough intent to extract addressable units, derive assets, and retain source relationships.
