# Semantic Markup
Semantic markup labels the role or meaning of content for machines and downstream systems.
TEI quotation elements, schema.org vocabulary, RDFa, and microformats can identify quotation-like content. Atomic Markdown goes beyond labeling by allowing an author to transform a contextual sentence into a separately grammatical autonomous surface during composition.
