## Definition
**Shoebox** was an experimental IBM voice-recognition system introduced in 1961 by engineer William C. Dersch. It could recognize the spoken digits zero through nine and six arithmetic command words, passing them to an adding machine.
## Historical Significance
Shoebox was a small-vocabulary demonstration, not general language understanding. Its importance lies in making a new human-machine interface publicly concrete: a person could speak rather than translate intent into switches, cards, or typed commands.
The system came from IBM’s Advanced Systems Development Division. It belongs to the early IBM machine-intelligence lineage surrounding the opening of the [[IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center]], but current evidence does not justify assigning its invention to Yorktown.
