The surviving form is not merely visual decoration. A store may retain the shelf after selection becomes generative; a job may retain the title after production becomes automated; an institution may retain the form after administration becomes continuous reconciliation. The old vocabulary lets people transact with a new system before its ontology has been publicly renegotiated. ## Three Persistence Mechanisms - **Institutional inertia:** inherited language and procedure outlast the mechanism they describe. - **Strategic ambiguity:** incomplete explanation preserves optionality across actors with different interests. - **Deliberate masking:** a familiar form is actively maintained because disclosure would alter adoption, valuation, legitimacy, labor, or regulation.
