# Sovereignty **Domain:** Agency / Self-Governance **Doc Type:** Concept Node **Maturity:** Developed ## Definition **Sovereignty** is the capacity to govern one's choices, commitments, attention, and participation without surrendering authorship of the self to an external script. ## Mechanism and Practice Personal sovereignty depends on perception before assertion. A person must recognize the system, language, incentives, and social pressures acting upon a choice before deciding which constraints to accept, negotiate, or refuse. Sovereignty therefore grows through self-knowledge, boundaries, competence, and responsibility for consequences. ## Relationships - **Related concepts:** Agency · Personal Agency · Boundaries ## Simple Reminders, Quotations, and Thoughts > “A person's story belongs to the one who lived it. Others may judge writings, music, or decisions, and they may even be partly right. No critic holds the power to invalidate a life's walk, with all its mistakes and triumphs.” > **— Bryant McGill**, *Self-Advocacy, Boundaries, and the Responsible Practice of Self-Interest - Livestream (Nov 2016)* Your Story Belongs to You by Bryant McGill
