# Status Competition **Domain:** Human Animality / Political Economy / Social Psychology **Doc Type:** Concept Node **Maturity:** Developing ## Definition **Status competition** is the struggle for relative position, recognition, access, and esteem within a social group. It can attach to wealth, skill, service, beauty, knowledge, sacrifice, reputation, institutional rank, scarce goods, or achievements that a community treats as credible. ## Resource and Recognition Loops Resource acquisition and status overlap because control of scarce goods can signal competence and alter real life chances. They are not identical: a person can gain status through mastery or service without becoming materially wealthy, and a person can hold wealth without receiving admiration. Institutions stabilize competition by specifying which achievements count, how progress is measured, and whether movement between positions remains possible. ## Post-Employment Consequence A post-employment society cannot assume that income support dissolves status competition. If paid work loses its role, competition may migrate into digital worlds, community service, creative achievement, reputation systems, physical performance, political belonging, or access to scarce locations and experiences. A durable social design must preserve nonviolent, attainable, and plural routes to progress without turning every human good into a winner-take-all market. ## Relationships Human Animality · Universal Basic Income · Universal High Income · AI Abundance · Human Agency ## Simple Reminders, Quotations, and Thoughts > “The reality is that the acquisition of resources is one of the most foundational drivers that we have.
