## Definition
**The Switchboard Corpus is a large collection of transcribed spontaneous telephone conversations in American English distributed by the Linguistic Data Consortium.** It became an important resource for speech recognition, conversational language modeling and discourse research.
Its value lies partly in texture absent from edited prose: hesitation, repair, acknowledgement, informal syntax and recurrent conversational pairs.
## Living Language Context
The surviving trigger source named `!swb_t.txt` in [[projects/Ten Years Building a Symbolic Language Engine|Ten Years Building a Symbolic Language Engine]] plausibly denotes Switchboard-derived trigger data. Pairs involving conversational expressions such as _yeah_, _uh_ and pronouns are consistent with that source.
The identification remains a documented reconstruction rather than a settled fact until the original toolkit documentation is recovered. [[wiki/Provenance|Provenance]] requires preserving that distinction.
## Key Insight
**Conversational corpora reveal the associative and structural behavior of language that polished text edits away.**
