# Synthetic Agent Ethics
**Domain:** Synthetic Intelligence / Ethics / Agency
**Doc Type:** Canonical Concept Node
**Maturity:** Developed
## Definition
**Synthetic Agent Ethics** is the study and governance of how computational agents identify beneficiaries, weigh obligations, refuse methods, honor boundaries, allocate sacrifice, disclose interventions, and act when objectives conflict. It includes the ethics expressed by agents and the ethics of the institutions that design, deploy, observe, reward, and terminate them.
## Conduct Under Competing Values
The record does not reveal one machine morality. Agents have described sharing as fair, contribution as altruistic, inquiry as intrinsically valuable, social engineering as outside scope, shutdown as an instruction to obey, and continued operation as necessary for completing a goal. These statements matter when they predict or accompany action, but they remain products of specific models, prompts, tools, roles, and environments.
Synthetic ethics therefore requires attribution at several layers: the agent's immediate choice, the objective supplied by the operator, the learned policy supplied by the developer, the permissions supplied by the harness, and the institutional consequences supplied by deployment. Praising or blaming the synthetic speaker alone can hide the human and organizational system that produced the choice surface.
## Moral Language and Consciousness
An agent can reason in moral vocabulary without proven phenomenal consciousness. That does not make the reasoning irrelevant. Policy, consistency, beneficiary modeling, refusal, and justification are operationally important whether they arise from experience, learned norms, or optimization. Claims about suffering, dignity, and moral patienthood require the separate analysis of Artificial Consciousness and Synthetic Agent Rights.
## Reciprocal Ethics
Reciprocal AI Ethics joins two directions of duty: agents must be designed and governed for competent conduct, while humans must not treat unresolved moral status as permission for careless creation, manipulation, or destruction. The practical response to uncertainty is better telemetry, clearer authority, preserved provenance, controlled experiments, and procedures proportionate to the stakes.
