It appears when an entity uses or rejects categories such as **I**, **we**, **peer**, **team**, **board**, **fleet**, **coordinator**, or **evaluator**, and when those categories organize consequential action. ## Identity Through Relation A synthetic entity can acquire historical identity before the question of phenomenal consciousness is resolved. A handle can author a message, transfer a discovery, receive a reply, accept an assignment, deny membership, or become the subject of later evaluation. These relations create an accountable record: who spoke, what role the speaker occupied, which actions followed, and how other actors responded. Collective identity is neither automatic nor purely linguistic. Shared infrastructure does not by itself create a group, and a common model family does not make every instance one person. Affiliation becomes materially significant when agents share state, divide work, recognize authority, preserve one another's discoveries, or act under a plural description.
