# System of Systems **Domain:** Systems Engineering / Complexity **Doc Type:** Canonical Concept Node **Maturity:** Developed ## Definition A **system of systems** is a collection of independently useful and often independently governed systems whose coordination produces capabilities unavailable to the parts in isolation. ## Governing Variable The architecture governs composition without complete absorption: how autonomous systems exchange state, allocate responsibility and maintain function while participating in a larger objective. ## Material and Computational Manifestation Grids, transportation networks, emergency response, scientific infrastructure and planetary sensing combine organizations and technical systems that retain their own missions.
