## Definition
**Systems Civilization** is a social order whose ordinary continuity depends upon coordinated computation, communications, logistics, sensing, modeling, energy and institutional feedback across scales larger than any individual participant can directly perceive.
It names a civilizational condition rather than a collection of advanced devices. A society enters systems civilization when infrastructure increasingly supplies the environment through which identity, mobility, work, knowledge and governance become possible.
## Historical and Cultural Context
Beyond the Sea locates a visible hinge in mid-century research campuses, domestic design, public exhibitions, corporate identity and spaceflight narratives. Mid-Century Systems Culture made the new condition emotionally and materially inhabitable; later interfaces made much of its mediation ambient or invisible.
## Governance Context
Systems civilization distributes agency but can centralize control at infrastructural chokepoints. Public institutions may retain formal authority while identity providers, platforms, networks or continuity hosts govern the operational substrate. Infrastructure as Power, Residual Sovereign and Administered Periphery describe different aspects of that transfer.
A viable systems civilization requires intelligible dependencies, plural providers, local refusal, portable identity and continuity, public accountability and constitutional limits that operate across technical layers.
## Key Insight
**When systems become the environment of ordinary life, infrastructure design becomes constitutional design.**
