# Telegraphy ## Definition Telegraphy is the transmission of symbolic messages over distance without physically transporting the written message. Electrical and submarine telegraph systems created early long-distance networks, operating practices and standardization problems. ## Corpus Context Telegraphy is the infrastructure in which [[wiki/CQ (Call)|CQ]] became an all-stations call. It also belongs to the prehistory of the [[wiki/International Telecommunication Union|International Telecommunication Union]], radio coordination and modern packet networks. ## Key Insight The lineage from telegraph to radio to digital network is not one unbroken institution. It is a recurring systems problem: addressing, discovery, shared encoding, interoperability and trust across distance.
