# Temporal Habitat **Domain:** Simulated Worlds / Time / Environmental Design **Doc Type:** Canonical Concept Node **Maturity:** Evolving **Related:** [[Nostalgia as Habitat]], [[World Simulation (Control Substrate)]], [[Receiving Theater]], [[Digital Afterlife]], [[Perceptual Sovereignty]] --- ## Definition A **Temporal Habitat** is an experienced historical period or cultural era configured as a persistent or selectable property of a synthetic environment. The habitat may reproduce a remembered past, combine signals from several periods or create a stylized era that never existed exactly as rendered. Its temporal identity shapes available language, fashion, technology, social expectations and forms of belonging. ## Distinction from Nostalgia [[Nostalgia as Habitat]] describes why a remembered period is chosen and how it supports identity. Temporal habitat describes the world-design variable itself. A resident could choose an unfamiliar historical period without nostalgia, while a nostalgic environment could blend several eras. ## Governance Context Temporal choice can expand agency, but it can also constrain development. Residents require plural habitats, awareness of construction, access to current information and freedom to move between periods. An operator should not use temporal enclosure to isolate residents from legal changes, social evolution or alternative communities. ## Key Insight **When time becomes an environmental setting, historical period becomes a governable feature of residence.** ## Sources / Provenance - Developed from the navigable decades of [[Black Mirror S3E4 — San Junipero]]. ## See Also [[Nostalgia as Governance]], [[Construction Transparency]], [[Post-Biological Residency]], [[Machine Mediation]], [[Exit Rights]]
