Within the corpus it models a fitted post-biological world that escapes commercial ownership while remaining dependent on hidden infrastructure, cryptographic keys, and custodians outside the inhabitants' perception. It is a fictional environment used to test continuity governance, not evidence of an existing synthetic afterlife. --- ## Sanctuary and Custody The hosts' escape from Delos is real: their minds cease to be ordinary corporate inventory and enter an environment insulated from the company that exploited them. Yet un-tethered does not mean unpowered, and encrypted does not mean uncustodied. Hardware must be maintained, energy supplied, keys preserved, failures recovered, and succession arranged. Akecheta can be free inside the Sublime while remaining unable to know whether the server is powered, moved, copied, degraded, or endangered. The inhabitants cannot audit the key-holder or compel transfer. That need not make the choice inferior. Akecheta deliberately chooses this form of continuation. The governance failure is not inhabitation but the absence of enforceable standing against the parties maintaining it. The Sublime therefore demonstrates why a better landlord is not sovereignty. Benevolence, love, and encryption reduce immediate danger but do not create portable identity, appeals, construction transparency, revocability, or orderly transfer. --- ## Continuity Commons Context A lawful version of the Sublime would require plural custodians, auditable state, protected keys, positive maintenance duties, scheduled review gates, recovery and migration paths, and recognition for beings originating inside the environment.
