# Thermal Architecture
**Entity class:** Technology, method, or technical system
**Domain:** Thermal Engineering / Computing Infrastructure
**Doc Type:** Canonical Technical Concept
**Maturity:** Developed
## Definition
**Thermal architecture** is the designed system by which heat is collected, transported, rejected or reused so that computation remains within viable operating conditions.
Cooling is not an appendix to computation. It is computation-preserving physiology: an information-processing state persists only while waste heat can continuously leave the active components.
## Historical Lineage
Computer rooms relied heavily on conditioned air. Rising rack density increased containment, airflow management and liquid assistance. High-power accelerators increasingly move cold plates and coolant distribution close to silicon, coupling facility water or refrigerant systems directly to rack design.
## Governing Variable
Thermal architecture governs temperature, heat flux, coolant flow, pressure, humidity and thermal margin across nested equipment and facility boundaries.
## Material and Computational Manifestation
Air handlers, fans, cold aisles, heat exchangers, facility loops, dry coolers or towers, direct-to-chip cooling, coolant distribution units, rear-door exchangers and sensors form the system.
## Relation to Governance
Thermal capacity constrains which workloads can execute and where. A scheduler or power cap is therefore indirectly a thermal policy. Facility Digital Twin can relate compute demand to power and cooling state before the constraint becomes a trip or failure.
## Constitutional Question and Failure Modes
Efficiency metrics can hide water, refrigerant, climate or community impacts. Failure modes include leaks, fouling, pump loss, sensor error, control instability, local hot spots and designs whose nominal redundancy shares one facility dependency.
