## Definition
A **threshold** is a condition or location at which crossing a boundary changes the set of possible states, rights or actions. It may be a doorway, border, eligibility rule, authentication score, alarm limit, quorum, credit cutoff or model trigger.
The unifying question is: **what transition becomes executable once a condition crosses a boundary?**
## Historical Lineage
Thresholds are among the oldest architectural and institutional devices. Gates, sacred precincts, city walls and court entrances joined physical passage to changes in role and authority. Measurement and automation later generalized the threshold into setpoints, alarms and machine-enforced transition rules.
## Governing Variable
Thresholds govern state transition. They determine when outside becomes inside, candidate becomes eligible, normal becomes alarmed or observation becomes intervention.
