## Definition
**Total design** is the deliberate coordination of architecture, furniture, objects, graphics, landscape, circulation and use as parts of one environment. It does not require that one designer author everything or that every part look identical. It requires that relationships among parts be treated as design decisions rather than leftovers.
## Historical Lines
[[Bauhaus]] approached total design through collaborative workshops, education and industry. [[Frank Lloyd Wright]] treated building, furnishings and setting as one organic work. [[Greene and Greene]] coordinated house, joinery, furniture, glass, hardware, textile and landscape through craft. [[Charles and Ray Eames]] later crossed furniture, exhibitions, film and information design.
## Political Ambiguity
Total design can support [[Design for Dignity]] by reducing friction and making an environment coherent. It can also become paternalistic or totalizing when users cannot alter, refuse or exit the system. It therefore interfaces with [[Transition Consent]], [[Perceptual Sovereignty]] and [[Infrastructure as Power]].
## Corpus Function
[[AmericanForme]] is a total-design project in the broad sense: clothing, objects, comportment, rooms, institutions and language belong to one [[Cultural Grammar]]. The concept provides an analytical baseline without requiring stylistic uniformity.
## Key Insight
**Total design is humane only when coherence does not eliminate agency.**
