# Transformational Extraction Transformational extraction produces an autonomous semantic object from source prose while applying an author-specified grammatical transformation rather than merely copying a substring. In Atomic Markdown, `documentOpening`, `quoteOpening`, shared text, and `quoteEnding` allow the extracted quotation to restore an antecedent, name an agent, clarify scope, or close a thought without changing what the source passage established.
