# Turbine Supply
A large gas turbine is a jet engine bolted to the ground and asked to run for decades. It is the fastest way to add firm generation at the scale a compute campus needs, and the order books for the biggest frames are committed years out. Where the grid cannot deliver power on the schedule a project requires, the project considers generating its own; turbine availability then becomes the schedule.
> [!note] The one-sentence version
> Firm power can be built on site faster than a transmission line can be permitted, provided someone ordered the turbine three years ago.
## Why it matters here
Compute demand arrives in large, discrete increments at specific locations, and the grid plans in decades. That mismatch creates a gap between when a campus is ready and when the utility can energize it; see Interconnection Queue. Generation sited at the campus, on the customer's side of the meter, closes the gap; see Behind-the-Meter Generation. Whether that option is available depends almost entirely on equipment delivery.
## Prerequisites
- **Simple cycle:** air is compressed, fuel burned, and the hot gas expanded through a turbine that drives a generator. Quick to start, lower efficiency.
- **Combined cycle:** the turbine's exhaust heat raises steam for a second turbine, converting substantially more of the fuel into electricity at the cost of a larger, slower, more capital-intensive plant.
- **Frame classes:** heavy-duty frames in the hundreds of megawatts, and aeroderivative units in the tens of megawatts, derived from aircraft engines and valued for fast starts and modularity.
- **Firm capacity:** generation that can be counted on at a chosen moment, as distinct from output that varies with weather.
- **Heat rate:** fuel energy consumed per unit of electricity produced; the measure of a plant's efficiency.
- **Reciprocating engines and fuel cells:** alternatives at smaller unit sizes, often deployed in banks, with faster delivery and different maintenance economics.
## Why the order books are long
Three manufacturers dominate large heavy-duty frames worldwide. Through the flat-demand decades their factories sized themselves to replacement and modest growth; the recent simultaneous arrival of compute demand, industrial electrification, and the retirement of older thermal plants has committed available slots well into the future. Turbines are also tightly coupled to their own supply chains: forged rotors, single-crystal blades, and specialized coatings have few qualified sources, and the skilled fitters who install and commission them are scarce in the same way that electricians are.
## How projects respond
Reserving slots early, including speculatively; using aeroderivative units or reciprocating engine banks whose delivery times are shorter; staging capacity so that a first block energizes on site generation while a later block waits for the grid; designing for dual service so that on-site generation becomes backup once the utility arrives; and participating in grid programs so that the plant earns its keep by supporting the system rather than only serving the campus. See Demand Response.
## Stack position
- **Upstream:** turbine manufacture, forging and casting, fuel supply and pipeline capacity, air permits, and commissioning labor.
- **Downstream:** campus energization date, and therefore the date compute begins producing anything.
- **Function and vendor:** firm on-site generation is one of several routes to power, alongside grid service, storage, and flexible operation; its advantage is schedule control.
- **Degraded case:** the campus waits on the grid, which can be the right answer where the queue is short and the wrong one where it is measured in years.
## Lineage and trajectory
The industrial gas turbine descends directly from aviation propulsion, and its efficiency gains came from metallurgy and cooling rather than from any change in the thermodynamic idea. Combined-cycle efficiency improved steadily through the 1990s and 2000s and then plateaued near the limits of current materials. The present trajectory is about delivery and flexibility rather than efficiency: faster-starting units, modular plants, hydrogen-capable combustors, and plants explicitly designed to idle, ramp, and support the grid rather than run flat. Compute campuses are becoming generation participants; a campus able to shed or supply load on request is worth more to a utility than one that only consumes.

## Evidence posture
- **Established:** simple-cycle and combined-cycle operation; heavy-duty and aeroderivative frame classes; the small number of large-frame manufacturers; the plateau in combined-cycle efficiency near current materials limits.
- **Established (datestamped):** as of October 2026, large gas turbine order books are committed years forward.
- **Strongly indicated:** compute campuses designed to support grid operations rather than only consume; such arrangements are being announced and their operating performance is still accumulating.
- **Unresolved:** how much on-site generation the buildout ultimately installs against grid service; the deciding evidence is interconnection and air-permit filings over the next several years.
