# United States Department of Defense **Entity class:** Organization or institution ## Definition The United States Department of Defense is the federal executive department responsible for the armed forces and national defense. “The Pentagon” is common shorthand for the department and its headquarters; it is not the name of a single intelligence service. ## Pantheon Interface In Pantheon S1E6, Chanda first assumes the Kim server is a Pentagon environment and later names the Pentagon among recipients of UI technology. The distinction matters because the fictional reference points to a defense establishment containing many operational and intelligence components, not to one agency. ## Digital and Command Architecture The Department's emerging digital stack is federated. CJADC2 connects sensors, data, commanders, and effectors; DoDIN carries and secures information; JWCC supplies multi-vendor cloud and edge services; Open DAGIR and the War Data Platform provide data and application integration; and Maven Smart System supplies an operational AI layer. Command authority remains with the President, Secretary of Defense, Joint Staff, and combatant commands. ## See Also National Security Agency, Defense Intelligence Agency, CJADC2, DoDIN, JWCC, Open DAGIR, War Data Platform, Secrecy-Induced Proliferation ## Sources / Provenance - [U.S. Department of Defense](https://www.defense.gov/) ## Relationships <!-- BEGIN HUMANIZED RELATIONSHIPS 2026-09-11 --> This entry's documented connections are expressed in its definition and related-work routes, with provenance retained in the source-linked material. <!-- END HUMANIZED RELATIONSHIPS 2026-09-11 --> - **command authority:** Secretary of Defense, Joint Staff, and combatant commands. - **network and cloud:** DoDIN and JWCC. - **data and AI:** CDAO, Open DAGIR, War Data Platform, and Maven Smart System.
