In 1919 he combined existing Weimar art-school institutions into the Staatliches Bauhaus and framed the building as a collaborative goal capable of reuniting arts and crafts. Under Gropius, the school moved from an early craft- and expressionist-inflected program toward greater engagement with industry and reproducible design. His Dessau Bauhaus building and the school’s publications helped make its work internationally visible. After exile from Germany, Gropius taught at Harvard and helped transmit Bauhaus ideas into American architectural education.
