## Definition
**Wayfinding** is the system by which people understand their position, identify destinations, select routes and recognize arrival within a spatial environment.
## Governing Variable
Wayfinding governs cognitive legibility. Signs, landmarks, sightlines, numbering, maps, lighting and spatial hierarchy convert a physical topology into an actionable mental model.
## Material and Computational Manifestation
Hospitals, transit hubs, campuses and cities use layered cues because a route that cannot be understood is not meaningfully accessible. Digital navigation adds dynamic routing and personalization, but can also shift practical knowledge from the traveler into a platform.
## Relation to Governance
Wayfinding can invite, warn, sort or deter. It is therefore adjacent to [[wiki/Access Geometry|Access Geometry]] and [[wiki/State Legibility|State Legibility]]: the institution makes space legible to itself through maps and sensors, while users require a legible environment to exercise agency within it.
## Constitutional Question and Failure Modes
Poor wayfinding creates unequal dependence on staff, language, vision, mobility or a functioning device. Over-personalized routing can hide shared civic geography and make route choice opaque. A public environment should make ordinary access intelligible without requiring surveillance or privileged prior knowledge.
