## Definition
The **Whole Earth Catalog**, first issued in 1968 under Stewart Brand's direction, was a periodically updated catalog of books, tools, technologies and practices for self-education and environmental agency. Its opening formulation—“We are as gods and might as well get good at it”—joined planetary awareness to practical access.
## Interface Form
The Catalog was not simply a magazine or sales list. It was a paper interface that connected readers to distributed resources. Short reviews, prices, addresses and cross-domain juxtapositions let a person traverse shelter, ecology, cybernetics, craft, communications and computing as one tool ecology.
This makes it an ancestor of networked knowledge systems and personal computing culture. It also embodies Access to Tools: agency grows when people can discover, compare and obtain the means to alter their environment.
## Fuller Lineage
Buckminster Fuller strongly influenced the Catalog's planetary and systems orientation. “Spaceship Earth,” geodesic design and comprehensive thinking supplied a grammar for moving between individual practice and planetary constraint.
## Corpus Function
Beyond the Sea treats the 1969 Catalog as evidence of an ecological-technological renaissance. It belongs to the same hinge as the Eameses, Fuller, spaceflight and cybernetics: a moment when ecology and technology had not yet hardened into opposing camps.
The Catalog is also a model of cognitive exteriorization. It does not decide for the reader; it expands the reader's reachable option set.
## Key Insight
**The Whole Earth Catalog made a distributed civilization browsable before the network made it searchable.**
