## Definition
**Wu wei** is a Taoist concept commonly translated as non-action, non-forcing, or effortless action. It does not require inactivity. It describes action that responds to the grain of a situation without unnecessary coercion, strain, or self-defeating interference.
Wu wei is best understood as skilled alignment rather than passivity. Preparation and responsiveness can make action appear effortless because force is no longer being wasted against the structure of the field.
